Three Hearts carved in Wood and Gold Embellished
This wood carving depicts the Sacred Heart of Jesus, the Immaculate Heart of Mary and the Chaste Heart of Saint Joseph. The Sacred Heart of Jesus is a symbol of Christ’s infinite love for mankind, it has wounds on its flanks, and the crown of thorns represents the wounds of our sins. A cross is implanted in it to represent the grief he has caused in his life and passions. This image was given by Jesus to the French nun Saint Margaret Marie Alacoque in a series of revelations in the 17th century.
The Immaculate Heart is where St. Luke writes that she “keeps all these things” (Luke 2:51), which she learned from Jesus’ mother. It represents her love for Christ and the world even though it is pierced by the sword (from Simeon’s prophecy in Luke 2:35).
Image of burning love surrounded by roses, similar to the image of the Sacred Heart of Jesus.
The pure heart of St. Joseph is wrapped in lilies, symbolizing his purity and holiness as consort of the Virgin Mary and foster father of Jesus.
